State Of Rock

In 2001, Brooklyn-based Girls of Porn (GOP) were a popular local rock band. They were on the track to success and doing everything right. They played clubs three nights a week. They booked regional tours. They had a world-renowned record producer set to mix their debut and shop their album to the majors. But shortly before recording was to begin, powerhouse lead singer Ray West (Spread Eagle) left the band to pursue a solo career. This was devastating news and G.O.P. was confronted with a tough decision: face band death, or find a new front man. State of Rock follows the remaining members of G.O.P. on their quest, introducing us to a driven bunch of unsung dreamers in the process: the roadie who always wanted to be in a band; the businessman who used to be; and the two would-be lead singers who get their chance (including a pre-American Idol Constantine Maroulis). Shot in and around Williamsburg, Brooklyn and two of NYC's most notorious rock clubs (The Continental & Don Hill's), the movie acts as both an intimate portrayal of band dynamics and a down and dirty concert film. The filmmakers were granted rare access to their subjects over a three year period, allowing for a deep, inside look at these musician's lives - both offstage and on. Funny, moving and sometimes surreal, State of Rock is a testament to a time, a place and the idea that making it is not always the solution.
